03/30/2010 UPDATE:  H1N1 Vaccine Available to Everyone

We are now able to offer H1N1 vaccine to anyone over the age of 6 months who wishes to be vaccinated.

Only the injectable form of the H1N1 vaccine is available.  All H1N1 Nasal Spray has EXPIRED.

We currently have a small amount of preservative-free injectable vaccine licensed for age 3 and older, but cannot guarantee that it will continue to be available.  If you have a thimerosal allergy or have other concerns and only wish to consider thimerosal-free vaccine, contact us first to be sure that we can accommodate this request.  Also, please note that all influenza vaccines are egg-based and we cannot administer to those with chicken or egg allergies.  Individuals who are egg-allergic may have their allergist contact us regarding vaccine availability for their patients.

FAQs regarding our H1N1 clinics:

  • How many doses do I need?  Those 10 years of age and older only need one dose.  Those under 10 will need a second dose 4 weeks after their first dose.
  • What if I just got the seasonal flu vaccine?  You can get both vaccines at any time, UNLESS you are receiving the nasal spray for BOTH.  Nasal sprays, whether for seasonal or H1N1 flu, must be given at least 4 weeks apart.
  • Are there residency requirements?   These clinics are intended for residents of the towns above, as indicated.  Vaccine is allocated by the state based upon the populations we serve.
  • Does the vaccine contain the preservative thimerosal?  The FluMist nasal spray does NOT contain thimerosal.  Most of the injectable vaccine currently in stock does contain thimerosal.  We will continue to order thimerosal-free injectable vaccine, but cannot predict it's availability at any given clinic.
  • What about individuals allergic to chicken or eggs?  All formulations of the H1N1 vaccine are egg-based and we cannot administer to those with chicken or egg allergies.  Individuals who are egg-allergic may have their allergist contact us regarding vaccine availability for their patients.
  • Will I need to pay for the vaccine?  No, the vaccine is provided at no cost by the federal government.  Healthcare insurance is NOT required, although some clinics may charge an administration fee to your healthcare insurance, if available.

If you are looking for more information regarding H1N1 or availability of vaccine outside of our area, contact the CT Department of Public Health H1N1 Hotline at 800-830-9426 (Available M-F, 7a.m.-7 p.m).  You can also find available clinics by calling 211.

The novel H1N1 vaccine will only protect you from novel H1N1 flu, not the seasonal flu.
