Ticks, Rabies, Plan Reviews and COVID-19 at the WWHD
The Westport Weston Health District has seen a big uptick in our typical seasonal workload activities in addition to COVID-19 response efforts. The submissions of ticks for identification and testing, animals for rabies testing, plan reviews, and realtor file searches are all on the rise. In fact, just in plan reviews alone we’re back to pre-COVID-19 levels, over 100 plan submittals for the month. Our clinical staff is also booking appointments for popular services like back-to-school vaccines and routine cholesterol and blood pressure screenings.
WWHD staff is working diligently to accommodate all requests, but we do ask that the public be patient as we respond to numerous emails, phone calls and COVID19 related meetings. Customer service is a top priority. Our goal is to balance the routine workload with the duties associated with COVID-19. As a local health district, we continue to be actively involved in the current pandemic in Westport and Weston. Contact tracing efforts have been ongoing since the first positive case was detected in Westport. This is a time-consuming process and involves calling infected individuals, as well as those who may have been in contact with someone who is positive for the virus. For each contact, there are numerous phone calls that must be conducted. WWHD nurses serve as a resource for the public and spend a great deal of time answering questions, making referrals, and reassuring patients. In addition to our clinical staff, the environmental health team is actively engaged in the reopening of area businesses that fall within the Health District’s purview. Members of our staff were an integral part of establishing protocols for outdoor dining, hair salons, and barber shops. In the coming weeks, inspectors will be making regular visits to open establishments to ensure compliance with safety protocols. These COVID-related activities require hundreds of additional hours of work.
As Connecticut’s business sectors resume operations, we will continue to serve as the public health resource for Westport and Weston. We will develop protocols that mirror federal and state guidelines and promote public health and safety for all residents. The WWHD is fortunate to serve such vibrant, thriving communities and we are grateful to a part of a successful, sustainable, and safe reopening.
