What we do: The Westport Weston Health District (WWHD) is a governmental agency which provides local public health services to the residents of Westport and Weston. WWHD provides a wide range of services to help keep the communities of Westport and Weston healthy. WWHD is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the First Selectmen of Westport and Weston. The staff includes highly trained professionals in environmental health, community health and emergency preparedness,

The Environmental Health Department of WWHD, together with state and federal health agencies, works to prevent and control the spread of disease in the environment and responds to local environmental emergencies on an around-the-clock basis. Public Health Sanitarians perform health inspections, investigate and resolve nuisance complaints, respond to public health hazards and educate the public about communicable disease prevention. Among the areas of concern are:

  • Permitting food service establishments,
  • Approval of septic systems and private wells,
  • Monitoring the water quality of public swimming pools, beaches and surface waters.

The Community Health Department  of WWHD provides health promotion and disease prevention through education, screenings, immunizations and surveillance. These efforts help prevent chronic disease and improve the health of the community. The majority of these services are provided at the Health District’s office and an appointment is necessary for most services. Regular programs include:

  •   Travel and routine immunization clinics, including Flu,
  •   Free blood pressure screenings,
  •   Walk-in wellness clinics,
  •   Cholesterol screenings,
  •   Confidential HIV/STD counseling.and testing.

The Health District’s public health nurses provide health check visits to the homebound residents of Westport and Weston and are also available to conduct free in-home safety assessments upon requests. Many services are offered free or at a reduced charge. The Health District also teams up with local medical organizations and providers to offer screening programs each year for breast and prostate cancer, skin cancer, as well as other health concerns.

The Health District’s health staff sponsors a wide variety of health education programs to the community in partnership with local civic organizations. A current health message and monthly calendar of events are available online.

The  Emergency Preparedness and Response Department conducts extensive planning to prepare for and respond to large emergencies. While the focus is on public health emergencies, such as the threats of pandemic influenza and biological terrorism, all hazards are considered, among which are the public health impacts after a hurricane or flood. In addition to planning, WWHD conducts regular drills to test and improve upon its plans.
This department also operates the Westport Weston Wilton Medical Reserve Corps (MRC), which utilizes volunteers to support and assist local health officials during public health emergencies. Those wishing to volunteer can call Mike Vincelli at 227-9571 x 233 or download the MRC application.
