What we do: The Westport Weston Health District (WWHD) is a governmental agency which provides local public health services. WWHD is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the First Selectmen of Westport and Weston.
Environmental Health works to prevent and control the spread of disease in the environment and responds to local environmental emergencies. Sanitarians perform health inspections, investigate and resolve nuisance complaints, respond to public health hazards and educate the public about communicable disease prevention. Services include:
- Permitting food service establishments,
- Approval of septic systems and private wells,
- Monitoring the water quality of public swimming pools, beaches, and surface waters.
Community Health provides health promotion and disease prevention through education, screenings, immunizations and surveillance. These efforts help prevent chronic disease and improve the health of the community. The majority of these services are provided at the Health District’s office and an appointment is necessary for most services. Services include:
- Travel and routine immunizations
- Free blood pressure screenings
- Walk-in wellness clinics
- Cholesterol screenings
- Confidential HIV/STD counseling and testing
Public health nurses provide health check visits to the homebound residents of Westport and Weston and are also available to conduct free in-home safety assessments upon requests. Many services are offered free or at a reduced charge. The Health District also teams up with local civic and health care organizations to offer a variety of health education and screening programs each year.
Emergency Preparedness conducts planning activities to prepare for and respond to emergencies. These include threats of pandemic influenza, biological terrorism, and other hazards. Westport Weston Wilton Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) relies on volunteers to support and assist local health officials during public health emergencies. Those interested in volunteering can call 227-9571 x 233 or download the MRC application.
